Recruited from Moe, Barry Rowlings was a tenacious left-footed rover who carved out a distinguished career across two major Victorian clubs. He initially established himself at Hawthorn, where his courageous ball-winning ability and distinctive running style made him a valuable asset in the Hawks' 1976 premiership triumph. Despite his success at Glenferrie Oval, Rowlings made a high-profile switch to Richmond ahead of the 1979 season, a move that would define the second half of his career and allow him to take on greater leadership responsibilities.

At Punt Road, Rowlings cemented his standing as a premier midfielder, combining elite endurance with a sharp goal sense. He secured his legacy by featuring prominently in Richmond's dominant 1980 premiership side, joining the select group of players to win flags at two separate VFL clubs. His influence extended well beyond his on-field performance, as he served as the Tigers' captain from 1983 until his retirement in 1986, guiding the club with professionalism during a transitional period. Although briefly linked to coaching roles at other clubs post-retirement, his reputation remains firmly tied to his dual-premiership success as a player.
