Stats
Bio
Basil Kiernan was a young wartime recruit brought into the Richmond fold during the heavily disrupted 1916 season. With the VFL competition reduced to just four clubs and playing lists decimated by enlistments, Kiernan was called up from the local ranks to help field a competitive side for the Tigers. He managed just two senior appearances in the middle of the year before his football ambitions were abruptly curtailed by global events. Shortly after his brief stint in the VFL, he enlisted with the Sea Transport Staff in July 1916, serving his country rather than returning to the field. Kiernan stands as a representative of the many "fill-in" players who ensured the league’s survival during the war years but whose own sporting careers were sacrificed in the process.
