Bio
Recruited from Caulfield, Basil Onyons was a rare bright spark in a struggling Melbourne lineup during the mid-1900s. He established himself as a dangerous forward early in his tenure, booting 16 majors to top the club's goalkicking during the disastrous wooden spoon season of 1906, a performance that earned him representative honours for the VFL against the Ballarat League. Despite his promise, Onyons walked away from VFL football after just four seasons, but his contribution to elite sport was far from over. Following service in World War I, he re-emerged as a distinguished cricketer, debuting for Victoria at age 32 and eventually captaining the state side to cap off a remarkable dual-sport legacy.
