Bio
Recruited from North Adelaide, Ben Hart entered the AFL system as a teenage prodigy and made an immediate impact that belied his age. Debuting as a 17-year-old in 1992, he quickly established himself as a uniquely gifted defender, earning All-Australian honours in his very first season. Hart was renowned for his versatility and athleticism; despite often conceding size to traditional key forwards, his vertical leap and ability to read the flight of the ball allowed him to play tall, while his agility enabled him to match up on smaller, faster opponents. His capacity to intercept mark and rebound off half-back helped modernise defensive play during the 1990s.
Hart became a defensive anchor during the Crows' most successful era, playing a pivotal role in the back-to-back premierships of 1997 and 1998. His consistency was remarkable throughout his tenure, evidenced by him winning the Malcolm Blight Medal as the club's best and fairest in both 1999 and 2002, alongside three further All-Australian selections. He was rarely beaten one-on-one and possessed the composure to distribute the ball effectively coming out of defence, rarely wasting a possession even under immense pressure.
