Recruited from the GWV Rebels with pick 13 in the 2021 National Draft, Ben Hobbs arrived at Tullamarine with a reputation as a ready-made inside midfielder. Known for his fierce attack on the contest and ability to win hard ball, he initially faced the challenge of breaking into an established Essendon engine room featuring the likes of Zach Merrett and Darcy Parish. This depth often forced Hobbs to ply his trade across half-forward or in rotation roles, leading to periods of speculation regarding his long-term future and search for pure midfield minutes. Despite the squeeze for selection, he developed into a combative stoppage player for the Bombers, tallying 65 games across his first four seasons as a tenacious contributor in the contest.
