Teams

Recruited from Peel Thunder in the WAFL, Ben Howlett arrived at Essendon as a mature-age selection in the 2010 Rookie Draft and made an immediate impact with his elite work rate. A tenacious midfielder who often rotated through a high-pressure defensive forward role, Howlett became a fixture in the Bombers' lineup during his early years, renowned for his tackling intensity and ability to win contested ball. His efforts in his debut season saw him recognised as the club's Best First Year Player, quickly shedding his rookie status to become a reliable weekly contributor who played nearly every game in his first two seasons.

Howlett's career trajectory was heavily impacted by the club's supplements saga, which resulted in him serving a 12-month WADA suspension throughout the 2016 season. Although he returned to the senior side in 2017, he found regular selection difficult to secure as the team looked to regenerate its list with younger speed. After playing a handful of games in his final season, he was delisted, departing the AFL as a highly respected clubman who provided grit and determination during a tumultuous period for Essendon before returning to captain Peel Thunder in the WAFL.
