Recruited from the Preston Knights with pick 62 in the 1999 National Draft, Ben Johnson defied his modest entry into the league to become a fixture of the Collingwood defence for over a decade. A dashing left-footer known early in his career for breaking lines with speed and aggressive ball movement, he gradually matured into a hardened lockdown defender and reliable tagger. Johnson possessed the versatility to play on the wing or half-back, often tasked with curbing the influence of dangerous small forwards while still generating counter-attack opportunities for his side.

A one-club player, Johnson featured heavily in Collingwood's most successful era under Mick Malthouse, playing in the 2002, 2003, and 2011 Grand Final defeats, as well as the celebrated 2010 Premiership victory. His desperate contest against St Kilda's Stephen Milne in the final moments of the 2010 Drawn Grand Final remains a defining image of his commitment to the cause, ensuring the Magpies survived to win the replay the following week. An Anzac Day Medalist in 2006 and a former club vice-captain, he retired in 2013 as a life member and a revered figure at the club.
