Bio
Recruited by Hawthorn via the rookie list, Ben McGlynn overcame concerns about his height to establish himself as a tenacious competitor, though he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the Hawks' star-studded midfield rotation. After missing out on Hawthorn's 2008 premiership success, he was traded to the Sydney Swans ahead of the 2010 season in a package deal alongside Josh Kennedy—a move that revitalised his career. At Sydney, McGlynn became a barometer for the team's intensity, revered for his elite tackling pressure inside 50 and his ability to pinch-hit effectively in the midfield.
McGlynn's tenure in the Harbour City was defined by his embodiment of the "Bloods" culture, but also by wretched fortune in September. He was a key component of the dominant 2012 side but suffered a hamstring injury in the first week of the finals, forcing him to watch from the sidelines as his teammates won the premiership. While he eventually reached the biggest stage, playing in the losing 2014 and 2016 Grand Finals, he retired without a medallion, remembered broadly as a selfless clubman who set the standard for defensive effort among small forwards.
