Bio
Recruited as a mature-age Category B rookie via Essendon’s Next Generation Academy, Ben McNiece qualified for the list thanks to his mother’s Indian heritage after impressing in the club’s VFL program. A tenacious small defender known for his disciplined lockdown work on opposition goalsneaks, he was thrust into the spotlight immediately, becoming one of the rare players to make their AFL debut in the traditional Anzac Day blockbuster against Collingwood. McNiece relied on his grit and defensive accountability to compete for a spot in the back pocket, playing 15 games across three seasons. Although he remained on the fringe of the senior side before his delisting in 2019, his rapid ascent from local football to the league’s biggest stage highlighted a career defined by perseverance.
