Bio
Recruited from West Adelaide via the rookie list, Ben Rutten made a memorable entry into the AFL by kicking goals with his first three kicks as a forward. However, his career was defined by his permanent shift to full-back, where he earned the nickname 'Truck' for his immense physical strength and immovable stature in one-on-one contests. Lacking high-end speed, Rutten relied on elite positioning, discipline, and superior bodywork to become the anchor of Adelaide's miserly defensive unit, particularly during the mid-2000s where he was pivotal in executing the club's defensive structures.
An All-Australian selection in 2005, Rutten was renowned for his ability to nullify the competition's best power forwards while rarely gathering high possession numbers himself. He served as a key member of the Crows' leadership group for several seasons, providing stability during a transitional phase for the club. Rutten retired in 2014 as a respected one-club player, leaving a legacy as arguably the most reliable key defender in Adelaide's history.
