Bio
The son of Sturt champion Sandy Nelson, Ben Nelson followed a winding path to the AFL that began when he was originally listed by the inaugural Port Adelaide squad. Before he could debut for the Power, he was dealt to Carlton in a pre-season trade involving Brent Heaver, famously making his first appearance in the Blues' one-off "M&M's" pale blue guernsey. A strongly built defensive midfielder and tagger, Nelson overcame early injuries to become a regular fixture in the Carlton engine room, notably playing in the 1999 Grand Final loss to North Melbourne. He returned to South Australia in 2002 via a trade to the Adelaide Crows in exchange for David Gallagher, but added just 12 games to his tally before being delisted. While his AFL tenure was that of a serviceable journeyman, Nelson solidified his footballing legacy in the SANFL, returning to Sturt where he became a premiership player, best-and-fairest winner, and club captain.
