Bio
Recruited from Barooga on the Murray River, Bernard Toohey joined Geelong as a highly-touted teenager and quickly established himself as a versatile key position player capable of operating at both ends of the ground. However, his career path shifted dramatically in 1986 when he became a central figure in the Geoffrey Edelsten revolution at Sydney. Targeted as one of several marquee recruits designed to turn the Swans into an instant powerhouse, Toohey justified the high-profile transfer by becoming a cornerstone of the defence during the club's breakthrough finals campaigns in 1986 and 1987.
While he managed significant goal tallies early in his career, Toohey is best remembered as a reliable, rebounding defender with strong overhead marking skills and a booming left-foot kick, attributes that earned him All-Australian selection in 1987. After serving as Sydney's captain during a turbulent financial period for the club, he returned to Victoria to conclude his career with Footscray. He provided vital experience to the Bulldogs' backline for two seasons, retiring as a durable competitor who successfully transitioned from a country recruit to a key leader during the competition's expansion into the national era.
