Stats
Bio
Bernie Dowling was a talented rover recruited from Maryborough who arrived at the Western Oval during Footscray's most successful era. He broke into the senior lineup as a teenager in the 1961 premiership season and made an immediate impact, polling two Brownlow Medal votes despite playing just three games that year. A creative small man capable of finding the football, Dowling unfortunately found himself squeezed out of the starting 18 by a star-studded midfield that included the likes of Merv Hobbs, causing him to miss selection for the club's historic Grand Final victory over Hawthorn. He remained with the Bulldogs for two more seasons, serving as a depth player in the post-premiership period before finishing his VFL career with 18 games.
