Bio
A strapping ruck-forward recruited from the coal mines of South Dudley in Gippsland, Bernie Guthrie arrived at Collingwood in 1933 amid high expectations that he could eventually succeed club legend Syd Coventry. Possessing a deadly left foot and surprising speed for his 184cm frame, he showed promise in his debut season but found his pathway blocked by the sudden emergence of Phonse Kyne. Unable to secure a regular senior spot at Victoria Park, he transferred to Northcote in the VFA before resurfacing in the VFL with North Melbourne in 1936. Guthrie added 16 games to his tally with the Shinboners over two seasons but left midway through 1937 to take up a coaching role with Yarram in the country leagues.
