Bio
Recruited from South Fremantle in the WAFL, Bernie Harris was a lively rover and forward pocket known for his sharp goal sense. He commenced his VFL career with Fitzroy in 1984, quickly establishing himself as a dangerous crumber who could rotate through the midfield and hit the scoreboard. During his three seasons at the Lions, he proved to be a reliable avenue to goal, averaging well over a goal a game before the expansion of the competition saw him head north.
In 1987, Harris became a foundation player for the Brisbane Bears, featuring in the club's inaugural match against North Melbourne at the MCG. He was a key figure during the Bears' difficult formative years, providing much-needed experience and finishing ability to a developing list. Harris notably enjoyed playing against his former side, including a five-goal haul against Fitzroy in 1988, and remained a regular selection until his retirement at the end of the 1990 season. He finished his career as one of the few players of his era to successfully transition from a traditional VFL club to the pioneering frontier of the national competition.
