Stats
Bio
Recruited from VFA side Yarraville, Bernie McVeigh was a physically imposing key position player who joined Fitzroy during the roster upheavals of the Second World War. Standing 187cm and weighing nearly 90kg, he brought significant size and strength to the Maroons' lineup, having previously established himself as a capable goal-kicker in the Association. His VFL tenure was restricted to a brief cameo of six games and two goals in the 1942 season, as his sporting career was ultimately secondary to his service in the Australian Army. McVeigh's short stint at the top level remains a classic example of the disrupted pathways faced by footballers whose athletic primes coincided with the war effort.
