Bio
Recruited from Railways, Bernie O'Brien was a goal-kicking rover who spent the majority of his career at the Western Oval, bookending a brief stint at Princes Park. After showing promise in his first two seasons with Footscray, he crossed to Carlton in 1931 for a solitary season where he managed a dozen games. He spent the following year as captain-coach of Yinnar in the Gippsland region before returning to the Tricolours in 1933, where he truly established himself as a senior regular.
O'Brien was a dangerous option around the stoppages who pushed forward to hit the scoreboard with impressive frequency, finishing his career with more goals than games played. His finest campaign came in 1937 when he was selected to represent Victoria twice, cementing his status as one of the premier smalls of the competition. He played his 100th and final VFL match in 1938 before leaving the league to take up a coaching position with Horsham.
