Bio
Recruited from neighboring VFA club Yarraville, Bernie Smallwood was a key position prospect who brought significant height to the Footscray list in the early 1950s. Standing 189cm, he was considered "tall timber" for the era, capable of pinch-hitting in the ruck or serving as a marking target in attack. despite his physical advantages, Smallwood found it difficult to cement a permanent spot in the senior lineup, managing just 13 games across three seasons while drifting between the firsts and the reserves. He eventually departed the Western Oval midway through 1952 to return to Yarraville, where he enjoyed greater individual success and became a regular goal-kicker in the VFA.
