Bio
Arriving at East Melbourne from VFA club North Melbourne, Bert Armstrong was a sharp-shooting full-forward who made an immediate impression by topping Essendon’s goalkicking in his debut season. Playing alongside his brother Lou, he formed a potent part of the Same Old’s attack, capable of dominating games as evidenced by six-goal hauls against Melbourne and Collingwood. Despite his individual prowess, Armstrong’s career is defined by misfortune during the club's golden era; injury cruelly sidelined him for both the 1911 and 1912 premiership triumphs, while a severe case of sciatica wiped out his entire 1913 campaign. Unable to regain his standing in the senior lineup, he transferred to the Essendon Association side in 1914, leaving behind a legacy of high potential curtailed by poor timing.
