Bio
Born in Leicester, England, Bert Ashby was one of the few international-born players to feature during the VFL's interwar period, having emigrated to Melbourne as a young child. Recruited locally from West Hawthorn, the 175cm utility faced a demanding apprenticeship at Glenferrie Oval, managing just two senior appearances across his first three years while plying his trade in the reserves. He eventually broke into the "Mayblooms" senior side for a sustained run in 1931, utilising the sharp reflexes and clean hands that also made him a premiership-winning wicketkeeper in district cricket. Despite his persistence, Ashby's career was heavily restricted by recurring injuries, which limited him to just 25 games over eight seasons before his departure in 1935.
