Recruited from local side Leopold, Bert Avery began his League career with South Melbourne, where he spent four seasons as a utility capable of playing as a follower or in defence. Despite his useful frame, he found regular senior opportunities limited at the Lake Oval and crossed to Melbourne in 1931 seeking a fresh start. The move initially paid dividends, with Avery establishing himself as a reliable contributor in the Demons' lineup across his first two seasons, utilising his 184cm height to good effect in contested situations. His aggressive approach notably saw him cited for violently pushing an opponent in 1932, but by the following year, he had fallen out of favour at senior level. After a final season spent largely in the seconds, he departed the VFL to continue his career in the Association with Prahran.
