Bio
Recruited from local side Chilwell, Bert Barling holds a permanent place in football history as a member of Geelong’s inaugural VFL team. A local product who broke into the senior side as a teenager, he was selected for the club’s historic first league match against Essendon at Corio Oval in Round 1, 1897. Though his career at the elite level was brief—spanning just two seasons and 17 matches—he was a regular contributor during the competition's formative years, managing to boot four goals before departing the VFL scene at just 20 years of age. While he did not enjoy the longevity of famous teammates like Teddy Rankin or Peter Burns, Barling remains notable as one of the original men to represent the Pivotonians in the newly formed league.
