Bio
Recruited from South Fremantle as part of the famous "Foreign Legion" influx that revitalised South Melbourne in the early 1930s, Bert Beard was a tall, strong-marking utility who could operate as a key position player or follower. He etched his name into Swans history as the 19th man in the 1933 Grand Final, where he was injected into the match during the second quarter to replace the injured Hugh McLaughlin in the club's premiership triumph. After playing just one game for South in 1935, Beard made a mid-season switch to Fitzroy where he finished the year before returning to Western Australia for lucrative employment outside of football. His sporting legacy continued through his family, with his son Neville later winning a Sandover Medal in the WAFL.
