Bio
Hailing from the goldfields town of Timor, Bert Boromeo was a pioneering ruckman of Italian heritage who became a dominant force for Carlton in the early 1920s. Recruited from the Maryborough district, he combined a powerful physique with elite speed—once winning the 220-yard sprint at Stawell—to become a formidable follower who captained Victoria in 1922. Boromeo was arguably best-on-ground in the Blues' 1921 Grand Final loss, but his relationship with the club collapsed two years later when he was controversially suspended for "creating dissension," leading to a bitter standoff that saw him sit out of VFL football for two full seasons. He eventually secured a clearance to Richmond in 1926, playing one season as a 34-year-old veteran before heading bush to captain-coach Horsham.
