Teams

Recruited from VFA contender Brunswick, where he had featured as a full-back in the 1910 Grand Final, Bert Butler arrived at St Kilda midway through the 1911 season. He managed just three senior appearances for the Saints before his VFL career was abruptly terminated by club politics rather than poor form. Butler was one of 18 senior players who famously refused to take the field against Carlton in Round 16, striking in protest of the committee's decision to ban former captain Joe Hogan and the father of star Wels Eicke from the change rooms. Following the standoff, he never played at the top level again, eventually obtaining a clearance to Brighton in the VFA the following year.
