Bio
Recruited from Ringwood, Bert Calwell was the younger brother of Carlton pair George and Clarrie Calwell and joined Hawthorn for the club's inaugural VFL campaign in 1925. A World War I veteran who had originally enlisted at age 17 without parental consent, Calwell broke into the senior side in Round 3 and immediately proved his durability, playing every remaining game of the Hawks' debut season. Standing just 173cm, he was a consistent small utility who featured 29 times during the Mayblooms' difficult introduction to the league before transferring to Camberwell in 1927. He went on to captain the VFA side until 1931 and later served his country again during the Second World War.
