Bio
Recruited from Echuca in the Goulburn Valley, Bert Cowley was a telegraph operator who arrived at Princes Park in 1911 seeking both a VFL career and a permanent employment transfer to the city. The mature-age recruit was granted a brief trial in the Carlton seniors, making two appearances in the middle of the season as the club tested its depth. Unfortunately for Cowley, he was unable to cement a spot in the side or secure the necessary work transfer to remain in Melbourne, cutting his league career short almost as soon as it began. He subsequently returned to the bush, leaving his VFL stint as a fleeting example of the challenges faced by country recruits attempting to crack the metropolitan leagues in the early 20th century.
