Bio
A Queenscliff native recruited from St Augustine's, Bert Drinkwater was a World War I veteran who served with the 2nd Division Signal Corps after enlisting in 1914, eventually making his VFL debut only after his safe return to Australia. He joined Essendon in 1918 as the league began to recover from the war years, helping to bolster a side that was rebuilding its playing stocks. Standing just 171cm, Drinkwater was a diminutive utility who typically operated as a rover or forward pocket, proving handy around the sticks with 15 goals across his three-year tenure. His career at East Melbourne was brief, concluding after the 1920 season, but he stands as a notable example of the returned servicemen who transitioned from the trenches back to the turf to keep the game alive during a tumultuous era.
