Bio
Recruited from North Adelaide in the SANFL, Bert Edward Day arrived at the Junction Oval in 1924 as an interstate transfer looking to make his mark in the VFL. While he demonstrated an ability to find the football—notably racking up 21 kicks in a single match against Essendon during his debut season—he struggled to cement a permanent place in the senior side, managing just 25 games across four seasons. Despite his short playing career, Day’s devotion to the club proved enduring; he returned to serve as a key powerbroker during a turbulent era for the Saints, sitting on the committee from 1947 to 1956. As Chairman of Selectors in the mid-1950s, he developed a reputation as a hard-nosed administrator, most famously finding himself at the centre of the controversy that led to the departure of star player Jim Ross in 1954.
