Bio
Recruited from the Sandhurst Football Club in the Bendigo Football League, Bert James was a tall ruckman who arrived at Punt Road during the immediate post-war era. Standing 188cm, he initially found success in the seconds, playing a role in the Tigers' 1946 reserves premiership victory before pressing for senior selection the following year. He made his VFL debut in Round 6, 1947 against Geelong but struggled to break into the starting eighteen, with all three of his senior appearances coming as the 19th man starting on the bench. Unable to cement a regular spot in the senior side, he crossed to the VFA to play for Oakleigh in 1948 before eventually returning to Sandhurst to finish his playing days.
