Recruited from Frankston, Bert McComb was a journeyman utility who experienced a disjointed VFL career during the late 1920s. After initially trialling with Essendon in 1924, he broke into the senior side for the first three rounds of 1925 before being omitted and subsequently cleared to Hawthorn midway through their inaugural VFL season. Standing 180cm, McComb struggled to cement a regular spot at the top level, bouncing between Hawthorn and country clubs Frankston and Stawell over a five-year period. He eventually returned to the Mayblooms to play 15 games across 1928 and 1929 but could not secure a long-term tenure in the side. Following his VFL retirement, he returned to the Mornington Peninsula as a captain-coach for Frankston and later enjoyed premiership success leading Port Campbell in the country leagues.
