A mid-sized backman standing 178cm, he was typically tasked with locking down opposition forwards in the back pocket or on a half-back flank, playing a dour role that yielded zero career goals but kept him in the senior side for two years. After 18 games with the Gorillas, Minney departed the VFL to continue his career in the Association, crossing to Preston where he became a reliable contributor throughout the war years.
