Bio
Recruited from the South Yarra Amateurs, Bert O'Connell was a wingman who made a brief cameo for St Kilda late in the 1908 season. He debuted in Round 17 against Fitzroy and held his spot for the final match of the year, but unable to secure a permanent place in the Saints' lineup, he crossed to the VFA the following season to play for Footscray. O'Connell became a regular contributor in the Association, playing 16 games in 1909, before his athletic career was overtaken by global events. His legacy remains that of a fallen soldier; after enlisting in the AIF in 1916 and rising to the rank of Corporal in the 60th Battalion, he died of wounds sustained during the Battle of Broodseinde in Belgium in 1917.
