Bio
Recruited from Leopold, Bert Russell was a diminutive forward who struggled to cement a permanent place in the South Melbourne lineup despite showing early promise. Standing at just 160cm, the Port Melbourne native made an immediate impact by booting three goals in his sole appearance during the 1921 season, yet found himself on the outer the following year. Russell drifted between the VFL and the VFA, spending the 1922 season with Williamstown before earning recalls to the Lake Oval in 1923 and 1925. While he possessed the sharp goal sense required of a pocket rover, he remained a depth player at the highest level, eventually concluding his career with a mid-season switch to Port Melbourne in the VFA.
