Bio
A medical student recruited from Melbourne University via the Melbourne VFA side, Bert "Baron" Salkeld was a foundation player for Essendon in the newly formed VFL. He established himself as a capable follower in the club's 1896 VFA premiership campaign before lining up in the Same Olds' historic first VFL match against Geelong in Round 1, 1897. Salkeld played the first five games of the inaugural season, booting three goals, before his domestic career was cut short by an injury sustained while representing the VFL in an interleague clash against a combined Bendigo team. Rather than returning to the field, he pursued his medical studies in Scotland and later served as a surgeon in both the Boer War and World War I, leaving a brief but significant mark as one of the league's original pioneers.
