Recruited from Williamstown, Bert Sutton was a flanker whose time at South Melbourne was interrupted by successful coaching stints in regional football. After establishing himself at the Lake Oval, he departed to captain-coach St Patrick’s in the Ovens & Murray League and North Launceston in Tasmania, steering both clubs to premierships before returning to South Melbourne to complete his tenure. His demonstrated leadership credentials subsequently earned him the role of captain-coach at Hawthorn in 1928, but the task proved insurmountable with the struggling Mayblooms. He oversaw a winless season in his solitary year in charge, unable to replicate his country success at the elite level before his VFL career came to a close.
