Bio
Recruited from Warragul, Bert Taylor was a sturdy defender whose VFL career ended on the ultimate high. A back pocket specialist, he starred in Fitzroy's 1922 Grand Final victory over Collingwood, earning a premiership medallion in his 50th and final game for the club. His time in the league was cut short by his profession as a policeman; after a transfer to Geelong for work, Fitzroy refused to grant a clearance for him to play for the Pivotonians. Forced off the field in Victoria, Taylor served as Geelong's non-playing coach in 1923 before heading west to play for West Perth and represent Western Australia. He remains a fascinating footnote in Maroon history, exiting the VFL as a premiership player at just 22 years of age.
