Bio
Recruited from the local metropolitan ranks with Richmond City and St Albans, Bert Wregg made a brief but effective cameo for Melbourne late in the 1901 VFL season. Operating as a full-forward, he demonstrated a reliable avenue to goal, booting three majors in his three senior appearances to finish with a neat average of a goal a game. While he could not secure a long-term spot in the Redlegs' lineup, Wregg ultimately made his name in the league as a pioneering official rather than a player. He returned to the VFL as an umpire, notably walking the boundary in the 1904 Grand Final—the first premiership decider to officially use boundary umpires—before taking charge of the play as the central field umpire for the 1906 Grand Final between Carlton and Fitzroy.
