Bio
Recruited from Devonport in Tasmania, William "Bull" Berryman arrived at South Melbourne in 1926 as a mature-age defender who had already established his quality by winning the NWFU's best and fairest award. A physically imposing full-back known for his strength and defensive accountability, he slotted immediately into the Bloods' lineup and became a fixture in the backline for three consistent seasons. While he never kicked a goal during his 47 games, his value was measured in his ability to negate opposition forwards through disciplined checking and contest work. His VFL career concluded on the highest possible note when he won South Melbourne's Best and Fairest award in 1928, after which he departed the city to captain-coach Rochester in country Victoria.
