Teams

Recruited from South Bendigo after a brief initiation with Geelong, Bill Burns became a foundational player in Richmond’s inaugural VFL team. A rugged and versatile follower, his Victorian career was a mix of on-field heroics and tribunal infamy; in 1909 alone, he refused medical attention for a concussion to kick a match-winning goal, only to later receive a life suspension for kicking an opponent. Although the ban was eventually successfully appealed, allowing a short-lived return to Punt Road, Burns found his true footing after permanently relocating to the WAFL. He carved out a distinguished second career with East Fremantle, playing in two premierships and earning state selection for Western Australia, ultimately retiring as a highly respected competitor who overcame a volatile start to achieve sustained success.
