Bio
Recruited from Brighton during the player shortages of the First World War, Bill Byrne played a single season for Fitzroy in 1917. He joined his brother Charlie Byrne at the club, appearing in ten senior matches as the Maroons contended with the depleted wartime competition. A regular fixture in the side throughout the year, Byrne contributed two goals and played his final game in the last round of the home-and-away season against Collingwood, though he did not feature in the club's subsequent finals campaign. His VFL career remained confined to that solitary year, and he died prematurely in 1930 at the age of 33.
