Born in the club's heartland of Carlton, Bill Churchyard was a local product recruited from Royal Park in the Melbourne Juniors competition. He broke into the senior side in 1898, the league's second season, joining a Blues outfit that was struggling to establish itself against the powerhouses of the new VFL competition. A handy forward option who could hit the scoreboard, Churchyard managed a respectable four goals across his ten senior appearances in an era where scoring was often low and defensive pressure high. Although his career at Princes Park was brief, concluding after the 1899 season, he stands as one of the pioneering players who helped lay the foundations for the club during its formative years in the major league.
