A follower recruited from Rutherglen in north-east Victoria, Bill Collins had a fragmented tenure at Princes Park at the turn of the century. After debuting in 1899, his time in the VFL was interrupted when he returned to the bush during the 1900 season to represent Excelsior, where he played a key role in their Ovens & Murray premiership victory. Collins returned to Melbourne late that same year to feature in the Blues' final three matches, concluding his brief senior career with 10 games and two goals.
