Arriving at Glenferrie Oval via the Richmond Thirds and East Malvern, Bill Collins was a tall forward who showed flashes of genuine scoring power during a lean era for Hawthorn. Standing 185cm, he made an immediate impression in his debut season of 1952, most notably booting a career-high six goals against Footscray at the Western Oval in just his fifth senior game. Despite this explosive start and a solid follow-up campaign in 1953, his career momentum stalled when he missed the entire 1954 season. Collins returned for a final brief stint in 1955, concluding his time at VFL level as a capable attacking target who had demonstrated the ability to command the forward line before his premature departure.
