Bio
Making his debut as a 16-year-old during the tumultuous years of the First World War, Bill Cubbins evolved into the premier full-back of the 1920s. Renowned for his booming drop kicks and spectacular high marking—a rare trait for defenders of that era who typically focused on spoiling—Cubbins was a pillar of stability in a St Kilda side that frequently struggled for on-field success. His individual brilliance was recognised with four club best and fairest awards and the club captaincy, cementing his status as one of the Saints' first true superstars despite the team's lack of finals appearances during his tenure.
His time at the Junction Oval ended in controversy following a bitter dispute with the committee in 1930 regarding his role as captain-coach. Cubbins subsequently crossed to Footscray, where his leadership credentials saw him immediately appointed captain-coach of the Tricolours. He marshalled the Bulldogs' defence for four seasons, maintaining his high standards until his retirement. His standing as an elite defender was later formalised with induction into the Australian Football Hall of Fame and selection at full-back in St Kilda's Team of the Century.
