Family

Recruited from Alphington with strong football bloodlines as the nephew of Collingwood’s Maurie Sheehy, Bill Deague was a durable utility who split his career between Melbourne and Hawthorn. He initially made his way at the Demons as a follower and defender, featuring in the club's 1932 Seconds premiership side, but struggled to cement a permanent senior position against stiff competition. Seeking greater opportunity, Deague was cleared to Hawthorn in 1937 in a trade for Bert Chandler, where he found more freedom to push forward and booted the majority of his career goals. While contemporary reports praised his aerial strength and marking hands, he was often critiqued for his erratic kicking and balance in general play. He eventually departed the VFL to play in Warrnambool, leaving his league career stranded on the agonising tally of 99 games.
