Bio
Born Thomas William McKenna, Bill Downie adopted his stepfather's surname before earning his opportunity with the Blues from local feeder side Carlton District. Standing just 173cm, the diminutive recruit broke into the senior lineup midway through the 1927 season and tasted immediate success, featuring in back-to-back victories against Fitzroy and Essendon. Despite this promising start, his VFL career was confined to those two appearances before he departed the league. His life later ended in tragic circumstances in 1952, when he was killed in a workplace accident following the collapse of a trench in Parkville.
