Recruited from Heidelberg in the Diamond Valley Football League, Bill Elsworth was a diminutive rover who joined Hawthorn during the tenure of coach Jack Hale. Standing just 173cm, he was a typical small man of the era, tasked with winning the ground ball and drifting forward to hit the scoreboard. He broke into the senior lineup midway through the 1955 season, making his debut in Round 11, and retained his place for the remainder of that year. However, Elsworth struggled to cement a permanent spot in the starting eighteen the following season, adding just three more games to his tally in 1956. He departed Glenferrie Oval after two seasons, having played 10 senior matches as the club began its slow build toward its first golden era.
