Bio
Recruited from East Fremantle in the WAFL, Bill French managed a brief senior career as a forward, playing just three games for Essendon across the 1908 and 1909 seasons before spending time with the club's 'A' side. His football journey was interrupted by the Great War, where he served with the 7th Battalion at Gallipoli and suffered severe injuries, including a crushed back, during the fighting at Lone Pine. While his on-field contributions were limited, French became a dedicated stalwart of the club off the field, returning to Windy Hill to serve as a committeeman for sixteen years. His extensive administrative tenure included significant stints as vice-president and chairman of selectors during the 1940s, cementing his status as a key figure in the club's governance long after he hung up the boots.
