Bio
Recruited from Tatura after attending Geelong College, Bill Heaphy was a talented all-round sportsman whose brief VFL career was defined by a rapid ascent and a tragic conclusion. He joined Essendon from West Melbourne late in the 1908 season and was immediately thrust into the spotlight, playing just his second league game in the Grand Final loss to Carlton where he was the youngest player on the field. The forward pocket managed only three more appearances for the Same Olds before transferring to Brunswick mid-1909, where he promptly played in a VFA premiership side later that year. Heaphy's potential was never fully realised due to a heart condition that forced his early retirement, and he died in 1914 at the age of 25 after accidentally consuming poison instead of his prescribed medication.
